What?

We at Michigan State University value the needs of each and every incoming freshman and we understand the natural difficulties which might arise during the transition from high school.  Our students’ academic, social, intellectual, artistic, physical, spiritual, citizenship responsibility is part of the first year experience initiative.  Our goal is to provide a blend between the residence halls and academic life through the delivery of information, services and programs in a relevant and inspiring way.  We believe that students will participate, discover, learn and be prepared for the rest of their college years.

Why?

Over the past 25 years, significant research has been conducted examining a student’s transition and first year of college.  This research has found that a student’s success in college is largely determined by their first year experiences.  In response to this research, MSU is piloting a First Year Experience (FYE) program to meet the special needs of this population.  Research of these programs has found that they increase GPA, retention, graduation rates and the overall college experience.
